Brief Intro to Australian railways

Until recently Australian railways were run by the governments of the six states and the Commonwealth (Northern Territory line and the Trans Australia line across the Nullabour) and has used/uses five different rail gauges. In 1979 the Australian National Railway (ANR) was formed from the state railways of South Australia (SAR), Tasmania (TGR) and the Commonwealth (CR). The name was later changed to Australian National (AN). In the early 1990's National Rail Corporation (NRC) was formed to run interstate trains, initially using leased rollingstock and locomotives but has since produced its own. The states still generally maintain and run their own systems, although many of these have been or are being privatised. Traditionally locomotive colour schemes have been simple and plain, this has all changed in the last fifteen years, with a wide variety of colours now seen on the rails.

The models on the following pages are based on the rollingstock that ran on the standard (4ft 8.5in) and broad (5ft 3in) gauges. The detailed descriptions indicate which states the item could be seen in.

The kits are grouped by the state of ownership and are generally noted by their 1979 Railways of Australia four letter code (except for four wheel wagons which were phased out in the late 1970's to early 1990's, locomotives and passenger cars.). This code uses the first letter to designate the state or system (N - NSW, V -Victorian, S -South Australia, W -Western Australia, A - Australian National and R - National Rail). The second letter indicates the type of wagon (L –louvre (boxcar) van, H - hopper, F - flat car, Q- container car, T - tank car). The third letter indicates the commodity moved or an alphabetical series. The last letter indicates if it can be bogied exchanged (used on both broad and standard gauge) letter X (100 km/h), or generally of the speed rating of the bogie A - slow (65km/h), F - fast (100 km/h).
